Hey there, beautiful! We all want our skin to look and feel its best, but sometimes, age, sun, and life happen. That’s where Kalon Medical Spa is here to help enhance your natural beauty with our rejuvenating laser and chemical peels. These treatments can work wonders, and today we’re diving into the world of skin rejuvenation to show you what’s what.

Laser Peels: Unveil Your Glow

Laser peels are precision tools that use focused beams of light to tackle skin issues. At Kalon Medical Spa, you’ve got a few options to choose from, including Halo Pro, MOXI, our new NanoLaserPeel, and more.

Benefits of Laser Peels:

  1. Laser Targeting: While a laser peel covers your whole face, they can also be dialed in on specific problem areas. Think fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, or acne scars. These peels focus in on specific skin concerns!
  2. Sensitive Skin? No Problem!: Since laser peels don’t use chemicals, they are typically easier for sensitive skin to handle. Laser peels also can be done as one more intense treatment or several more gentle ones if sensitivity is something you’re keeping in mind.
  3. Collagen Booster: Laser peels also give your skin a nudge to produce collagen. That’s the protein that keeps your skin firm and bouncy, and it means long-lasting results.
  4. On a Deeper Level:  Laser peels can target the surface of the skin to enhance your glow, but they can also be used to treat the deeper layers of your skin. A deeper peel allows your provider to treat fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and more.
  5. Bye-Bye Spots: Say goodbye to sunspots, freckles, and uneven skin tone. Laser peels will help you get an even, youthful glow—perfect for the holiday season.

Chemical Peels: The Skin Texture Miracle

Chemical peels are the skin’s best friend. They work by applying a special solution containing active ingredients like salicylic acid and retinol, that peels away the top layer of skin, leaving behind a smoother, radiant canvas. At Kalon Medical Spa, we have a variety of choices including glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peels.

Benefits of Chemical Peels:

  1. Texture Transformation: Chemical peels are your go-to for addressing rough skin, fine lines, and that uneven texture that’s been bothering you.
  2. Fresh Start: These peels get rid of dead skin cells, revealing the healthier skin beneath. They’re fantastic for reducing acne scars and evening out your skin tone.
  3. Uniquely You: Each peel can be personalized to suit your skin type and its unique needs, whether you’re a sensitive soul or made of tougher stuff.
  4. Beat Acne: Chemical peels can help tackle acne by clearing clogged pores, reducing inflammation, and preventing those pesky breakouts.
  5. Gentle Giants: They’re generally well-tolerated and don’t cause much discomfort. Plus, you won’t be out of commission for long—making them a great choice for most people.

Best Time to Get a Peel

The best time to get a peel is during the fall and winter months. Why? Because sun exposure can be tough on freshly treated skin, and UV rays can make pigmentation issues worse. So, schedule your peel during the cooler seasons when you’re less likely to be out in the sun—your skin will thank you!

Double up for Double Impact

Want to maximize the impact of your laser or chemical peel? Both types of peels combine beautifully with other treatments so you can look and feel like your most rejuvenated self! Our new nanopeel is amplified when done alongside a BBL.

We are both excited and honored to announce that Kalon is the first clinic in South Dakota to offer DAXXIFY® to patients! “DAXXI” is an FDA-approved injectable neuromodulator that is used to treat glabellar lines. Did you get all that?

Let’s back up a bit. DAXXI is a treatment used to smooth and soften frown lines between the eyebrows. It uses the same active ingredient — a purified botulinum toxin type A protein — as other injectable neuromodulators, but it is unique from its competitors in several ways.

For starters, DAXXI offers long-lasting results and time saved from fewer injection appointments.

DAXXI’s botulinum toxin, which temporarily blocks signals to the muscle, is attached to a protein. As a result, DAXXI can produce results that last from up to 6 to 9 months. Clinical trials have even found that for some patients, DAXXIFY results can last 2 to 3 times longer than Botox. Patients may notice these glowing results the day after treatment!

The great qualities of DAXXI just keep coming because it is also the only formulation to use a novel peptide (an ingredient that stabilizes the protein that smoothes frown lines) as a stabilizer, which means that it does not contain human or animal byproducts.

If smooth, softened frown lines are now calling your name, contact Kalon and schedule your DAXXIFY appointment today.

Exfoliants are even more important as we age because our skin doesn’t shed dead cells as efficiently, leaving us with less glow. (If there’s anything Kalon’s team can’t allow, it’s less glow!)

One way to refresh your glow is with exfoliants. Two common ones are alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and beta hydroxy acid (BHA). How do you choose between the two? First, the very basic way to decide:

  • AHAs are best for those with dry skin.
  • BHAs are best for those with oily skin.

However, like most skin care ingredients, AHAs and BHAs are backed by plenty of science worth considering. Both acids get rid of dead skin cells without the gritty formulas that usually come to mind, and that can be a good thing as AHAs and BHAs can target specific skin troubles in a way scrubs aren’t always able to.

AHAs come from sugar cane or other plants and are sometimes referred to as “fruit acids.” They benefit both the outer and inner layer of skin, promote collagen production, and can reduce signs of sun damage. (Yes, you still need sunscreen!)

BHAs, on the other hand, are used most widely for acne and work on the outer layer of skin and inside pores. The most recognizable BHA — salicylic acid — and its counterparts are oil-soluble, meaning they work well on normal to oily skin prone to clogged pores and blemishes. BHAs are calming and gentle on sensitive skin.

Want to get really fancy? Combine BHAs and AHAs. Many products already do, but test carefully to avoid reactions. Visit Kalon’s retail boutique to find AHAs, BHAs, and more to achieve a well-rounded skincare routine.

Halloween is here and with it comes a timely reminder to evaluate your skincare routine (and to add chocolate to your grocery list). Colder air means drier air, which has a noticeable effect on the way your skin looks and feels.

But you likely already know all of that (and the best places to hide your chocolate to boot). What you may not know is how to go about tweaking your routine. The moisturizer that made you glow in July might not be doing the trick anymore, but swapping it for something else can be downright scary. What if a new moisturizer causes a breakout? Or makes your make-up look, well, ghoulish?

So instead you keep using the same products and hope the cold weather passes quickly.

We get it. We’ve all tried to power through with what we already know and love. But we’ve found that a few simple tweaks can make a big difference. Here are a few things to try as temps drop:

  1. One at a time. Instead of clearing out your routine and subbing in a completely new one, change just one product at a time. This way, you can pinpoint what’s working and what isn’t.
  2. Weigh your moisturizer. Common sense tells us to increase our moisturizer’s frequency and thickness during colder months, but proceed with caution as that can also cause clogged pores. Ideally, you’d select a moisturizer from the same brand you already use and step up to something heavier for fall and winter. Try alternating between your lighter and heavier moisturizer as your skin acclimates to a new routine.
  3. Check labels. Look for products with glycerin, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid as those ingredients pack the greatest moisture punch.
  4. Add on. Boost your current routine simply by adding an exfoliator or serum. Exfoliators remove dead cells, preparing your skin to better receive moisture while serums contain calming ingredients that can soothe dry, flaky skin. Some products even do both. Another helpful add-on? Hydrating masks. Treat your skin twice a week for best results.
  5. Try rotating. Your skin can build up a tolerance to products so pay attention to what works and for how long. When one product loses its effectiveness, have another to rotate into your routine.
  6. Be nutrition minded. Summer provides regular vitamin D and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to consume, but as the weather grows colder, those things aren’t as readily available. When our nutrition suffers, so does our skin. Taking a daily supplement can make up the difference until the warmth returns.

We’d love to talk more about your skin’s unique needs! Our knowledgeable staff can recommend the perfect products to get your skin on the path to a healthy glow. We offer convenient online shopping and curbside pick-up options. Start by booking your virtual consultation today.

Drink water, apply sunscreen, and don’t forget to moisturize.

If you follow a skincare routine, you’ve most likely heard these simple rules. And you probably do your best to follow them. But, despite your best efforts, you can’t seem to avoid the inevitable: wrinkles.

What is preventative Botox?

The bad news is that you can’t prevent aging. The good news? You don’t have to live with those frown lines. Getting preventative injectables like Botox and Dysport is a growing cosmetic trend for women in their mid-20s to early 30s to prevent wrinkles. Instead of waiting to fix wrinkles, patients are now starting treatments earlier to prevent lines from happening in the first place.

Certain types of wrinkles can become difficult to treat after they’ve formed. By beginning Botox or Dysport earlier, you can take a proactive approach to your skincare.

When to start

Officially, Botox and Dysport are FDA-approved for patients 18 years or older.

“Every patient has a different skincare journey,” Alyssa Letcher, PA-C, said. “While it’s never too late to start caring for your skin, we’ve recently found more clients who want to take steps now rather than wait for fine lines to appear.”

“While it’s never too late to start caring for your skin, we’ve recently found more clients who want to take steps now rather than wait for fine lines to appear.”

Besides age, an ideal injectables patient is someone worried or bothered by the early signs of wrinkles. The early formation of forehead lines, crow’s feet, frown lines, etc. can indicate a patient’s eligibility for treatment.

“It’s best to begin treating wrinkles when they first appear,” Amber Eliason, RN, said. “Early treatment can sometimes even prevent them from appearing at all.”

Injectables and the body

Facial nerves tell your muscles to contract. Botox and Dysport block these nerves, preventing those muscle contractions. The treatment trains facial muscles to avoid wrinkles.

Deep lines can be prevented by slowly decreasing the use of these muscles. Preventative injectables typically result in a more natural result due to the small treatments over time.

“At Kalon, we work with each patient to ensure that the finished result leaves them looking refreshed and natural,” Eliason said.

Wondering how to maximize your skin care routine? Worry s(no)w more! Here are Kalon’s five tips on maintaining your glow during the dark days of winter:

1. Wear sunscreen

Cold weather does not impact UV rays, so applying an SPF in the winter is still important. Snow can also reflect the sun’s rays. Be sure to protect anything exposed to the sun, especially your face, neck, and hands.

Alyssa Letcher, PA-C, loves using Revision’s Intellishade. “I rave about this one all the time. It is tinted, moisturizing, and has an SPF of 46.”

2. Exfoliate—less

Flaking, cracking, and even eczema often become problematic during the winter. Additional exfoliation can exacerbate skin dryness.

“The skin has a natural lipid barrier,” Kayce Hansen, Licensed Aesthetician, says. “When you exfoliate more than three times per week, you’re stripping your skin of its natural moisture and defense against dry skin.”

Kacye recommends exfoliating three times per week to achieve best results.

3. Use a hydrating cleanser

Hydration is key for surviving a South Dakota winter. One exciting part of the winter season is the opportunity to try new products! Opt for gentle cream-based cleansers, like Coconut Milk Cleanser by Éminence Organics. Take care to avoid toners, astringents, and products that may contain alcohol as these may further dry your skin.

Kayce likes to use Éminence’s Stone Crop Hydrating Mist throughout the day. “The hydrating mist keeps my face from appearing dry,” Kayce says. “You can also spray it over makeup!”

4. Moisturize

Show your hands, lips, and face a little extra love during the winter. Chapped lips affect just about everyone in the winter, but you can stay ahead of the dryness by always carrying a lip balm.

Hands also tend to get neglected in the winter, and cracked hands can emphasize signs of aging. Keep a generous supply of hand creams and chapsticks readily available to combat dryness. Place them in familiar spots–like your car, home, and purse–and apply regularly!

5. Start from within

The outside world may be cold and barren right now, but that doesn’t mean your diet has to be! Stock up on leafy greens and natural fats to get a healthy glow. Kale, avocado, and fish all provide essential nutrients. Though you should maintain a balanced diet year-round, pay extra attention to providing your body with foods that support healthy and moisturized skin during winter.

For skincare, one vitamin stands out: vitamin C. Vitamin C does more than just keep your immune system healthy. This super-vitamin works hard to brighten your complexion and even-out your skin tone while diminishing the appearance of wrinkles.

Benefits of vitamin C

Vitamin C’s most important benefit may be its ability to protect against free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can cause damage to cells. Simply put, free radicals accelerate the skin aging process. Vitamin C keeps your skin looking young and healthy by neutralizing free radicals.

As a topical treatment, vitamin C encourages skin to heal itself by producing collagen and elastin at an accelerated rate. Both collagen and elastin are important for maintaining the firmness of skin. Vitamin C can help prevent aging of the skin by facilitating extra collagen production.

How to find the right vitamin C product for you

During your next visit, ask about our vitamin C products and we’ll recommend the best option for your skin.

Currently, Kalon carries the following vitamin C products:

  • SkinMedica Lytera 2.0
  • Revision Vitamin C+ Correcting Complex 30%
  • ZO Skin Health Brightalive

How to achieve the best results

For the best results, apply your vitamin C product underneath your daily moisturizer in the morning and at night. Use only a few drops during application, since the serums can often be potent.

It’s as easy as 1-2-3, A-B-vitamin C. With daily application, you’ll be c-ing great results in no time!

Autumn means pumpkin spice lattes, comfy sweaters, and orchard adventures. It’s also the end of summer and a fair warning of winter to come. As the long lake days and pool parties fade, you may want to refresh your look. Try dermaplaning and you’ll begin fall with a fresh new glow.

Dermaplaning can transform your skin

Dermaplaning promotes cell regeneration and conditions your skin for more complete absorption of healthy conditioning products. The procedure also eliminates dead skin cells and pollution buildup. After the procedure, your skincare products will be more effective and your makeup will go on smoother. You’ll notice an immediate difference after treatment, and the results will continue to last through the month.

A gentle and pain-free process, you’ll have soft, glowing skin with no downtime

One of our Kalon professionals will use a medical-grade scalpel to gently remove the “peach fuzz” hairs from your face. The procedure will gently exfoliate your skin, removing the hairs and dead skin cells. The entire appointment will last around 45 minutes.

Since hair growth speed is affected only by genetics, your hair will not grow back thicker or faster after the procedure. You’re free to safely enjoy the benefits of dermaplaning without affecting normal hair growth.

To maintain your smooth, hair-free skin, we recommend coming in for one treatment every month.

Dermaplaning Benefits Recap

  2. Removes peach fuzz
  3. Eases makeup application
  4. Promotes cell growth
